The most important task in our life: Salat (prayer)

"The most important task in our life is prayer" - this saying contains a deep truth in the basic teachings and philosophy of Islam. Salat or prayer is the second pillar of Islam, which is the most important and essential act of worship for a Muslim after faith. It is not just a religious ritual, but a means of direct communication between the servant and his Creator and the key to worldly and hereafter success.

1. Fundamental Importance of Prayer

Why prayer is considered the most important act of life is clearly stated in several places in the Quran and Hadith:

A. Pillars of Islam:

In a Hadith, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "The foundation of Islam is five: testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad (peace be upon him) is His servant and Messenger; establishing prayer; paying zakat; performing Hajj and fasting Ramadan." (Bukhari, Muslim) According to this narration, prayer comes after faith, which proves its fundamental importance.

B. First Accountability:

The first deed that will be taken into account in the Hereafter is prayer. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "The first deed that a servant will be taken into account for on the Day of Judgment is prayer. If his prayer is correct, he will be successful and will be saved. But if there is a flaw in it, he will be unsuccessful and will be in loss." (Tirmidhi, Nasa'i) This shows that the ultimate success in life depends on prayer.

c. Distinction Between Believer and Disbeliever:

Prayer is the act of worship that distinguishes between disbelief and Islam. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "The difference between a servant and polytheism and disbelief is abandoning prayer." (Muslim) Intentionally abandoning prayer is considered a very serious sin in Islam.

2. Spiritual and Psychological Benefits of Prayer

Prayer is not only an obligatory act of worship, but it has numerous spiritual, mental and moral benefits:

a. Direct Connection with Allah:

Prayer is a golden opportunity for a servant to directly communicate with Allah. Allah Almighty says in the Quran, "Seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient." (Surah Al-Baqarah, verse: 153) When a problem or distress arose, the Prophet (peace be upon him) would stand up in prayer and seek help from Allah.

b. Prevention from Immorality:

One of the main purposes of prayer is to keep people away from injustice and bad deeds. Allah says, "Indeed, prayer keeps (people) away from indecency and evil deeds." (Surah Al-Ankabut, verse: 45) When a believer prays with concentration, fear and awareness of Allah are created in his heart, which helps him stay away from sinful acts.

c. Expiation of Sins and Purification:

Prayer is a means of wiping out the minor sins of a servant five times a day. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said with an analogy, "If there were a river at the door of one of you, and he bathed in it five times a day, would there be any dirt on his body?" The companions said, "No." He said, "The example of the five daily prayers is also similar. Allah erases sins through it." (Bukhari, Muslim)

D. Tranquility of the Heart:

Salat brings peace and stability to the heart of the believer. Whenever the Holy Prophet (PBUH) felt restless about something, he would say to Hazrat Bilal (RA), "O Bilal! Arrange for prayer and give us peace through it." The heart is calmed through the remembrance of Allah and humble prayer. The Quran says, "Know that in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find peace." (Surah Ar-Ra'd, verse: 28)

3. Social Impact of Salah

Salat is not only a personal act of worship, but it also has a greater social significance:

A. Unity and Equality:

The five daily prayers, especially the Friday prayers, are a lesson in unity, brotherhood, and equality among Muslims. Here, rich and poor, black and white, rulers and ruled, all bow down before the same God in the same row. This eliminates social differences and fosters a sense of collective obedience.

b. Punctuality and Discipline:

Prayer is obligatory at specific times. Allah Almighty says, "Indeed, prayer is prescribed for the believers at specified times." (Surah An-Nisa, verse: 103) This punctuality creates discipline and regularity in the personal lives of Muslims, which is essential for success in work and social life.

c. Increase in Piety:

Prayer increases the awareness of Allah or 'taqwa' in the servant. The standing, bowing, and prostration of prayer remind the servant repeatedly of his surrender to Allah. This piety is the foundation of all kinds of character excellence.

4. Consequences of Abandoning Salah

Deliberately abandoning Salah is one of the most serious sins in Islam. The Quran and Hadith have given strict warnings about its consequencesThe people will ask: "What has cast you into Saqar (a level of Hell)?" They will say: "We were not of those who prayed." (Surah Muddassir, verses: 42-43)

Declaration of Doom: Allah Almighty has declared a doom called 'Wail' for those who pray lazily: "So woe to those who pray who are heedless of their prayers." (Surah Ma'un, verses: 4-5)

Salat (prayer) is not just an act of worship, but it is the center of a Muslim's life. Its place is after faith, and it is the first thing that will be accounted for on the Day of Judgment. It connects the servant with his Creator, calms the mind, purifies it from minor sins, and prevents him from obscenity and wrongdoing. Prayer creates punctuality, humility, concentration, and piety in the life of a believer, which leads him to the path of ultimate success in this world and the Hereafter. In a word, prayer is such an essential act of life, without which the life of a Muslim is purposeless and incomplete.

Therefore, prayer is the most important act of our life, which strengthens our relationship with Allah and ensures all the blessings of life.
