Community-Driven Growth to Transform Te Tuk Puh and Knong Psa

A government-led initiative empowering local communities to develop Te Tuk Puh and Knong Psar—Kampong Speu’s pristine natural resorts—has garnered praise from tourism experts, who believe it will drive sustainable growth and improve livelihoods.

During a visit to Knong Psar on March 8, Prime Minister Hun Manet emphasized that private investment would be restricted in the area, ensuring that tourism benefits remain in the hands of the community. He stressed that instead of allowing large-scale corporate development, the focus should be on building local capacity.

“We must not replace the community’s role—we must teach them how to manage tourism businesses themselves,” he said. “If they lack the skills, we will provide guidance. The goal is to help them thrive, not just create temporary jobs.”

Thoun Sinan, Chairman of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), hailed the decision, calling Te Tuk Puh and Knong Psar “untapped paradises” with immense tourism potential.

“These sites are like hidden gems, rich in natural beauty and cultural heritage. By letting locals lead development, we ensure long-term benefits for their communities,” he said on April 1.

A recent inspection by Tourism Minister Huot Hak, alongside industry representatives, explored ways to design community-based tourism packages that attract visitors while preserving the area’s authenticity.

Nature and Culture in Harmony

  • Te Tuk Puh boasts geothermal springs spanning over 80 square meters, with mineral-rich waters reaching 70°C. The indigenous Suoy people consider the springs sacred, believing in their healing properties. Visitors can immerse themselves in Suoy traditions, including folk dances and daily village life.
  • Knong Psar features sprawling forests, dramatic mountainscapes, and diverse wildlife, serving as a natural bridge between Kampong Speu, Koh Kong, and Pursat provinces.

With its community-centric approach, the initiative aims to transform these sites into sustainable tourism hubs—where nature, culture, and local prosperity go hand in hand.
