Today I will discuss with you about oxide and its classification.
## Introduction: In general chemistry, every elemental substance is considered as a unit in the calculation of the chemical composition of a compound and the calculation of molecular or gross signals. Which has been discussed in the previous chapter. But in the case of ceramic body, glaze, enamel and other batch calculations, their basic constituents are not considered as the basic material but the oxide component is considered as the basic unit even though oxides are composed of basic substances.
However, in some chemical calculations, basic substances are taken into consideration. This is more reliable in accounting. In fact, from a ceramic point of view, the use of oxides is more reliable. In the same way the molecular weights of different oxides are used numerically in chemistry.
Oxide: When an element combines with oxygen to form a two-element compound, that compound is called an oxide.
## Classification on the Oxide in View of Ciramic: All the raw materials used in ceramic body, glaze enamel are basically a combination of oxides. From the point of view of ceramics, these oxides are divided into three classes.
## Basic Oxide: The oxides that metal elements combine with oxygen to form oxides are usually called basic oxides or alkaline oxides. Their main characteristic is that they react with acids to produce salt and water, and when soluble in water, their aqueous solution turns red litmus blue.
## Acidic Oxide: Oxides of non-metallic elements are commonly called acidic oxides or acidic oxides. They produce acids in aqueous solutions, redden blue litmus, and produce salts by reacting with alkalis or bases.
