[Animals]: The dancing ostrich

Hello friends!

It is always very surprising to see farms where ostriches are grown in Ukraine. At least for me, it was always a surprise. There are quite a lot of farms in the Odessa region. But it's nice for me just to watch these birds. Ostriches are very funny. Their emotions sometimes run wild. Very often they create entertainment farms. Families come with children and spend their holidays very actively. I like these farms

Intensive ostrich farms have been developing in Ukraine since 2000. Today, there are a lot of farms throughout Ukraine that are engaged in breeding, meat production, egg incubation, sale of ostrich skins and fat.

The ostrich is the largest bird on Earth, so it is well known to most people. Previously, other closely related species of birds, such as nandus and EMUs, were also referred to ostriches, but modern taxonomists distinguish them into separate orders, so from a scientific point of view, there is now only one type of real ostriches — the African ostrich. Nandu and EMU have retained the old names of the American and Australian ostriches, although they do not correspond to the current systematic position of these species.

The main segment of Ukrainian ostrich farms is ostrich meat and skin.
Additional — food eggs, eggshells (making Souvenirs), fat (making cosmetics), feathers (making jewelry, accessories).

Huge size — that's what first catches the eye when looking at an ostrich, because in height this bird is not inferior to a large horse. The height of the ostrich from the tips of the paws to the top of the head is 1.8-2.7 m, the average weight is 50-75 kg, but the heaviest males can weigh up to 131 kg! But the brain of ostriches is no bigger than a walnut, so they are considered primitive birds;)

Another unique, but little-known feature of ostriches is the separate excretion of feces and urine from the body. As you know, in all birds, urine and feces are excreted simultaneously in the form of semi-liquid droppings. But in ostriches, both substances are excreted separately, they are the only birds in the world that have a bladder. Ostriches do not have a goiter, but their necks are very stretchable and they can swallow quite large prey whole. Vision in these birds is well developed. External auditory openings clearly appear on the weakly feathered head and even resemble small ears in their shape.

Ostrich-a stupid bird, but very careful. During feeding, ostriches often raise their heads and look around with a sharp eye. They can see a moving object on the surface of the plain for a kilometer. If there is a suspicion of danger, the ostrich tries to move away in advance, not allowing it to approach the predator. Therefore, it is not entirely safe to approach an ostrich closely.
Ostriches eat mainly plant food, but they are more likely to be called omnivores. Along with grass, leaves, and fruits, they can eat insects, small lizards, turtles, and even birds and animals.

Even in ancient times, ostriches were hunted for their feathers. Since ostrich feathers do not have a decorated fan, they are soft to the touch and swaying beautifully in the wind, so they were used for making plumes of warriors, fans, and since the middle ages — for making fans and decorating women's hats. The peak demand for feathers occurred in the 18th century, when ostriches were exterminated over large areas, and the number of the Arab subspecies was so undermined that by 1966 it was completely extinct. It is good that now there is no danger of extinction of ostriches!

Ostriches are polygamous birds, so each male tries to gather more chosen ones around him and mates with all the females. However, in an ostrich harem, one female always takes the lead and may linger near the male until the end of nesting, while the rest are removed. The male digs a hole in the ground with his paws, in which the females alternately lay their eggs. Ostrich eggs are both the largest and... smallest in the world. In absolute size, ostrich eggs, weighing 1.5-2 kg, are the largest among all birds, but relative to the size of the body of an adult bird, they are the smallest. Imagine an omelette made from ostrich eggs:)

This beautiful ostrich in the photos met my grandfather in the city of Ananyev. It turned out that he loves to entertain the audience and dance, if you feed him a little... Everyone loves attention and love

Until next time, @r3benok
