[Antarctica]: The penguins have arrived

r3benok

Hello friends!

You are already used to traveling with me to Antarctica. This is a very unusual trip thanks to my friend Vadim Zhukovsky. Today we will talk about the Gentoo penguins that have started arriving on the island where the Ukrainian Vernadsky station is located.

Habitat — sub-Antarctic Islands. The species is widely distributed in the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the Kerguelen archipelago. The subantarctic penguin (gentoo) also breeds on Macquarie, heard and MacDonald Islands, the North of the Antarctic Peninsula and nearby Islands.

They feed on krill, less often on small fish. The natural enemies of the species are killer whales, sea lions, and leopards. Seabirds do not pose a threat to adults, but they do threaten eggs and Chicks.

Males reach a weight of 9 kg, and females — 7.5 kg, the height of adults — 75-90 cm. Under water, they reach speeds of 36 km/h, which makes them the fastest of all penguins. The diving depth can reach 200 m.

Nests are arranged among tufts of sod grass. The female usually lays 2 eggs, the clutch is incubated by both parents for an average of 34 days, changing in a few days. After 14 weeks, the Chicks begin to go to sea.

The penguins are just arriving. Soon they will start building nests. In recent years, a very large number of penguins have appeared on the island where the Ukrainian station is located. They come to the station and look in the Windows:)))

All the movements look very funny. Penguins feel great in the water, but on land they are completely clumsy

It is very interesting to watch when they descend from the slides on their stomachs

Penguins are quite curious, they inspect all the premises of the station, look everywhere, try to open the door to the premises

A friend now has to pull the cable to install their sensors. And the question arose: how to protect the cable from penguins and their curiosity

Penguins are very beautiful and unusual creatures. They love to pose for the camera and are not

afraid of people at all

Then just enjoy the penguins and the nature of Antarctica
