Hun Sen Responds to Negative Thai Comments with “Don’t Thai to Me!” Quip

Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen has fired back at what he described as a small number of “ill-intentioned” Thai netizens who regularly post derogatory comments about Cambodia on his social media, telling them: “Don’t Thai to me!”

In a post on his official social media page on Sunday night, Hun Sen said the reaction came after noticing that Thai media had picked up and reported on a video of him playing golf earlier that day. He said the coverage showed that some Thais were closely following his activities.

“Whenever I post something, more than 5% of the viewers are from Thailand,” he wrote. “The highest was when I posted about using slingshots as weapons, when Thai viewers accounted for 17.1%.”

According to Hun Sen, among those viewers are “a small number of ill-intentioned Thais” who frequently leave comments in Thai or English with negative messages directed at Cambodia.

“I do not delete them,” he said, “but sometimes I respond briefly: ‘Don’t lie to me.’”

Hun Sen’s remark quickly drew attention online, with many Cambodian social media users supporting his response while also urging for calm in the face of online hostility.

The exchange comes amid heightened tensions along the Cambodian-Thai border in recent weeks, with nationalist sentiment flaring on both sides.
