The future hinges on the AI we create: Centralized vs decentralized | Opinion

AI might be the next technology to bring an abundance of resources that will enable Western civilization to flourish following years of stagnation and decline. Society is now a static framework run by elites who attempt to dominate the system in order to keep their preferential position, only to widen the inequalities.

Summary

Centralization generates stagnation: Monopolies, financial elites, and militarized corporatism have generated inequality, wars, and social degeneration since the 20th century.

AI as rebirth: Decentralizing AI could set off a new Renaissance—increasing access to information, enabling startups, and equalizing resources worldwide.

AI as threat: Moving AI into tech monopolies or state authoritarian regimes threatens further inequality, snooping, and even totalitarian domination.

The decision is evident: Humanity has to fight monopolistic capitalism, uphold ethics and antitrust, and keep AI from being a weapon of war or propaganda.

Way forward: Open-source and decentralized AI — based on blockchain, edge computing, and distributed networks — has the best chance to create inclusive growth and a new society.

The centralization of society within a regime of money elites has led to retarded growth, hoarding of resources, and social tension, resulting in wars, class struggles, and mass irrationality.

Western civilization appears to be mired in a war that only appears to be intensifying. This is maybe as far back as World War I. The military-industrial complex, monopolistic capitalism, global tensions, and corporatism are all symptoms of this stagnation and centralization.

Maybe AI is a tool that can assist in rebirth of expansion, but to accomplish that, it will need not to exacerbate the already-present inequality. To achieve that, AI will need to be decentralized from tech giants, and it will need to induce a decentralizing force on society's resource allocation.

AI could be a positive new mechanism for expansion, which fosters growth. And while this new technology could decentralize power, it could also centralize power, leading to increased stagnation and conflict.

AI’s decentralizing promise: A new Renaissance

AI democratizes information and may enable Western civilization to usher in a new Renaissance era. The query is: Does AI eventually centralize or decentralize power? In the event that it empowers individuals, small organizations, and diverse populations, it would demote barriers for less well-endowed people and bring about an era of innovation, enabling, for example, startup entrepreneurs to compete with Silicon Valley.

Large Language Models represent a new normal, enabling everyone with access to the internet to write ideas, code, produce art, or interpret that which previously took heavy-duty resources. Excess computational capacity is being utilized to invent and expand shared knowledge, as well as boost economic production. These open-source AI systems are starting to enable startups in emerging nations to compete with giants, expanding geographical and economic frontiers.

And while much of the conversation is about the fear of a dystopian AI, AI might rather decentralize power from nodes of power, such as Silicon Valley and governments, to the rest of society.

This arrival may bring the expansion of entrepreneurial economies and more democracy, raise employment, lower inequality through individualized education and medicine, and heighten entrepreneurial activity.

The centralizing threat: Power in the hands of a few

However, AI may further concentrate power in current systems. It is presently dominated by tech monopolies or dictatorial regimes, like the CCP in China, which, without being balanced, would not benefit society. The innovations would be halted, disparities would worsen, and tensions would result in mass war. If monopolies in tech reserve the best of AI innovation for themselves, like more capable models than are yet open to the public, the same outcome would occur.

The question is begged: Will entrenched interests fight open AI innovation? Will they persist down the monopolistic capitalism road, or will they cultivate free markets? If they choose monopoly capitalism over decentralization of free markets, then the result will be worsened class struggles, mass unemployment, and an even greater gap between the elite and the working class. Our age of irrationality will continue, as will social unrest — a continuation of what we’re seeing today. AI could be used as a tool of propaganda, the likes of which the world has never seen before.

It may be employed as an instrument of pervasive surveillance, pre-emptive policing, and information control. AI may provide the state-enterprise with even greater power than it possessed previously. It may establish a one-world government where a totalitarian state consolidates the world under its heel, eliminating diversity in the process. There would be further moral decay — stagnation, war, and eventually, war. Autonomous weapons and cyber warfare would be unleashed against the world. Proxy wars and economic sanctions would be controlled by machine masters, who are merciless. The digital divide would be unbridgeable. This need not be the destiny of humanity. Humans possess free will to dictate the future of AI. Ethical frameworks and antitrust policies may be employed as weapons against centralization and AI dystopia, preserving the future of decentralization and rebirth. Instead of being complacent, we should promote the decentralization of this potent technology, prioritizing privacy, strength, and accessibility, along with distributed AI resources and processing.

Maybe, the most straightforward method of achieving this is through open-source and decentralized AI networks, like those using blockchain technology or edge computing on personal machines. Open-source AI may support collaboration and aid in reorganizing society into an era of expansion, saving it from the current trajectory of deterioration.

The future is hanging in the balance.
